Welcome to Riverside Cultural Arts and History Magnet School where learning is accomplished through hands-on experiential lessons within an integrated thematic curriculum.  Each classroom contains its own library of age appropriate literature.  Through the generosity of our Parent Teacher Organization and grants from the Wichita Public School System, our children enjoy learning with technology, utilizing hand held Palm Pilots,  wireless laptops  and research centers with internet access in each classroom as well as the library. Their learning activities are documented not only in their own written reflections and artwork but also with the use of digital still and video cameras.  Our students are supported not only by a qualified, compassionate staff but also a cadre of dedicated volunteer parents and community members.  At Riverside, students are assured success through overall caring for the individual needs of each student.

Upcoming Events

Grandparents' Day, Open House, Book Fair, Oh, My!

Not many schools would venture to do so many things at one time but Riverside is no ordinary school.  Starting first thing in the morning on September 12, Grandparents began arriving at our front door to be welcomed with fresh baked cookies and a name tag and to be escorted to their student's classroom.  There they shared memories of their own school days and observed how different school is for their grandchildren at Riverside.  Many thanks to all the grandparents who visited with us and also to the volunteers who baked cookies and welcomed our special guests.

Later that same day, the doors were opened for our annual Open House where families were able to come meet their children's teachers, visit their classrooms and tour the school.  For many, it was a matter of renewing old acquaintances as families returned after summer break.  Everyone seemed eager to start the new year with our People of Our Past theme as many of our second generation families shared stories of "When I went to school here..."

Our Scholastic Book Fair was open during that week and families were able to visit and shop while they were in the building.  It was another very successful year for the book fair.  Not only does the book fair provide easy shopping for student reading but Riverside also gets to keep a portion of the proceeds in paperback books.  We use these books to reward students for their reading minutes throughout the year.  Be sure to have your students turn in their reading minutes to get a free book!

In addition to purchasing books for themselves, students and their families also purchased books from their teachers' wish lists to be used in their classrooms.  Each classroom at Riverside has its own reading library for students to choose from during Self Selected Reading time.  Your donation helps keep their selections current and interesting for the students.  Many thanks from the teachers to all the families who purchased books for them.

Three volunteer parents were key in managing the book fair this year.  Special gratitude goes to Lesleah Roach, Patty Mock and Paris Watson.  They put in hours and hours making the book fair possible.
